Embedding Sustainability

We're up to the challenge

Every job can be a sustainability job. And every role is an opportunity for impact.

Profiles in purpose

Our purpose—to boldly challenge what’s possible for a sustainable world—starts with our people. Sustainability is not a function at our company—it is integrated into every aspect of our business.

Our strong sustainability performance is a direct result of our culture. We’re committed to creating an inclusive, engaging and uplifting culture where we can all thrive and make a meaningful impact.

Business Strategy

How Cal Krause makes an impact as an embodied carbon specialist

My role is focused on embodied carbon strategy, specifically reducing all the emissions that make up our products.

From the time a unit is metal in the ground, the manufacturing processes that happen to those different materials, and when we finally assemble them at our plants, all of those emissions kind of add up to be embodied carbon.

And then ultimately, what happens at the end of life for that product? Is it recycled, repurposed, refurbished?

I care about sustainability. I want to live in a healthy, safe world where people are comfortable and can go outside and breathe fresh air.

We have our Gigaton Challenge, of course, which is our commitment to reduce one billion metric tons from our customers’ carbon footprint by 2030. That’s the big one—it covers over 90% of our value chain emissions. It’s helping our customers have more efficient, more environmentally friendly equipment.

But also looking to our suppliers, a lot of our emissions come from those materials that come from those products. So, I’m really excited that Trane Technologies is committing to a 40% reduction of embodied carbon in key materials that go into our products by 2030.

Engineering

How Emma Van Fossen makes buildings greener

My name is Emma Van Fossen and I’m the energy engineering team lead for our central team in Energy Services

I work on projects to make buildings more energy efficient and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In reality, energy efficiency is one piece of it, but there are so many ways to meet the goals of customers that come to energy services: demand management, thermal energy storage or energy storage in general. We even work with renewable systems. We put the puzzle together in the way that makes the most sense for the customer.

I would say sustainability focus is really engrained in our culture. I think that’s really the foundation. Everyone I work with every day is excited about contributing to our climate commitments, increasing the sustainability of our industry and the world.

I’m always learning new things – more than I ever expected to after college. And I’m always getting to scratch that itch for problem solving. That’s so rewarding to have that continuous learning.

Working at Trane Technologies to me means working with a great team to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals.

Supply Chain

How Alessandra Hammond makes our supply chain more sustainable

Alessandra Hammond.

I've been at Trane Technologies since January 2021 and I lead the Global Business Operations team for Integrated Supply Chain.

I like to say that we bring people, process, technologies and data together.

We call ourselves the connectors and the enablers.

Basically, we connect people, we connect teams, we connect different groups and functions to enable the business to operate.

To me, sustainability, it's not only what we report in the ESG report, but it's also what we do every single day to make our life much better and easier.

My team's impact on Trane Technologies sustainability goals

One is we bring the data visibility to allow leadership to make informative decisions.

But we also have a dedicated group that leads supplier diversity and sustainability.

So we are connecting with procurement, legal, the CEES team, the environmental health and safety team to really help to connect the dots between our purpose and our commitments, but operationalize these on a day-to-day basis.

Feeling so empowered to bring something new to the business and never received a negative answer, but like let me understand, let me listen, let me hear what you have to say and empower us to make that impact.

And I'm super excited of what the future brings.

Every team has a unique connection to our purpose.

We are accelerating action toward our bold 2030 Sustainability Commitments and our net-zero goals, and true progress comes from people across our company taking action every day. From finance and supply chain to operations and field service, every team makes an impact.
